An embassy or consulate can provide a friendly face abroad and assist travelers with lost or stolen passports, emergencies, or just general information.
Local consular offices can also provide a list of local doctors, dentists, and medical specialists. Calling an embassy or consulate in Jamaica can be a challenge because the telephones aren't always immediately answered, but once contacted, they can be valuable travel resources.
If you are involved in an emergency, go to the nearest embassy or consular office for your native country and register as a citizen in the region. If you are injured or become seriously ill, a consul will help you find medical assistance and, at your request, inform your family or friends. It is unlikely you'll receive government financial assistance from an embassy if you need an emergency trip back home, but pre-purchased travel insurance will cover such expenses. Travel insurance is a wise provision for an unforeseen cancellation or incidental medical expenses. Purchase travel insurance directly or through your travel agent rather than a tour operator.

Although you will likely never have to contact your local embassy during your trip to Jamaica, knowing where to find them is a good precaution to take. Include these numbers on a list of emergency contacts that you bring with you to the island, so if an emergency does occur, you can get in touch without panic arising.
