Visit Jamaica and find world-class tennis on one of the Caribbean's most popular islands
Tennis, Jamaican Style
Although nearly every tennis court in Jamaica is located on a resort, each one offers its own unique style or spectacular tropical view. A few Jamaican resorts are home to what are undeniably some of the most popular courts in the Caribbean.
Resorts in Jamaica often staff their courts with highly skilled tennis pros. At three of Jamaica's top resorts, Tryall Club and Half Moon in Montego Bay and Sandals Grande Ocho Rios, sports fans should note that often in Jamaica, top tennis and golf spots go hand-in-hand. Tryall Club and Half Moon both offer world-class golf as well as tennis.
Tryall Club has nine hard-surface courts. These are all extremely well-maintained, and three of them also include lighting for nighttime play. Although guests can play free, using the lights will cost $20(USD) per hour. Non-guests need only pay $30(USD) per hour for court time. Reservations help enthusiasts ensure a spot and professional lessons start at $40(USD) per hour.
Half Moon is home to what are considered the top tennis courts on Jamaica. Here, visitors will find 13 all-weather Laykold courts, seven of which are lit. Guests can play free any time, day or night, at Half Moon. However, those not making the resort their home away from home will need to obtain a $40(USD) day pass, giving them access to all of Half Moon's tennis facilities. These include a pro shop and lessons starting at $50(USD) per hour.
For a change of pace, visit Ocho Rios' Sandals Grande, formerly the Sandals Ocho Rios and Beaches Grand Sport, and play on clay or hard surface courts, all of them lit. However, there are only three clay and three hard courts, so space is limited. Guests play free at all times and are offered lessons starting at $30(USD) per hour. These courts are also noteworthy because they offer guest tournaments and twice-daily tennis clinics.
While these three resorts don't offer the only top-notch tennis on the island of Jamaica, they are certainly a few of the most well-known. Travelers looking for a date with the courts can stay anywhere they like and almost always find a place to play, whether for an additional fee at another resort or at their own.
